The Secret of La Salette and the dilemma for the Popes:

An early drawing of the site of La Salette.

The warning in the Secret accords with that foretold in Scripture.

Pope Leo XIII and the Secret of La Salette:

Pope Leo XIII took an initial interest in the Secret when it was shown to him, in person, by the
seer of La Salette, Melanie Calvert Mathieu. It was when the Secret had recently received a
Bishop's Imprimatur, from Bishop Zola of Leece (1879.) Melanie was in Rome at that time seeking
the final approval for a rule for a religious Order she was seeking to establish at La Salette.
Pope Leo's initial interest in the Secret corresponded with his support for the apparition and the
site at La Salette itself. Pope Leo, well known as being a Marian Pope (he wrote eleven encyclicals
on the Rosary) promoted many Marian sites; it was he who raised the church at La Salette to the
status of a Basilica.
Pope Leo, however, came under intense pressure from a number of French bishops who disliked
the Secret (for what is said as to the clergy, and as to what would happen to the Church.) It meant
unwelcome and unneeded pressure. And so, just as the apparition itself was objected to by some, so
too with the Secret, when it was finally revealed. And yet the Church was right to approve the
apparition. And Bishop Zola was right to give the Secret his Imprimatur.
All of the controversy combined, however, to contribute to the dilemma of La Salette, and which
very much included the confusion caused by the two versions of the Secret having been made
known during the reign of Pope Pius IX. And, with what the Secret foretells of what will happen to
the Church; all of this led to the Church inadvertently silencing all parts of the Secret when,
instead, it was so vital for the Church, and for mankind, that the Secret was made known. And not
least because the Secret does accord with that foretold in Scripture for these very last times of the
world as we know it.
Interesting that Pope Leo's great prayer to St Michael is as follows:

Pope Leo XIII's great prayer to St Michael the Archangel is:

Holy Michael the Archangel, defend us in the day of battle, be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray; and do thou, Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust down to hell Satan and all wicked spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. Pope Leo XIII
